Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State

Borno State and military authorities on Wednesday reopened the 65Km Bama-Banki-Cameroon road which had remained inaccessible since 2012 as a result of insurgency. The road links Cameroon to parts of Central Africa.

Governor Babagana Zulum, alongside the Theatre Commander, ‘Operation Hadin Kai’, Major General Musa Christopher, reopened the road at Banki junction on the outskirts of Bama town.

A statement by the special adviser to the governor on public relations and strategy, Malam Isa Gusau, said the state donated 10 operational vehicles to the army to keep vigil.

The statement said the governor appreciated the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari in the gains being recorded in counterinsurgency in the North East.

The statement said the governor also warned border officials against extortion and ordered the arrest of anyone engaged in the smuggling of goods along the road.

Earlier, the theatre commander thanked Zulum for supporting the army in the fight against insurgency and said reopening roads and resettling of displaced persons signified the end of the insurgency.

The governor later paid an unscheduled visit to Umar Ibn Ibrahim College of Education (UICEST) Bama, where he directed the Commissioner for Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (RRR), Mustapha Gubio, to immediately provide buses for students and ceiling fans to all classrooms.
