Angola is orchestrating a dramatic comeback for onshore oil exploration, and it’s the independent operators calling the shots. With offshore fields aging and production needing to stay above one million barrels per day, the country is turning to its long-neglected onshore basins as the next growth frontier. This shift takes center stage at Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) 2026, scheduled for September 9-10 in Luanda, where independent companies are showcasing aggressive exploration campaigns across Angola’s onshore acreage.
In the Kwanza Basin—Angola’s original oil heartland—Corcel is leading the charge at Block KON 16, having completed a 326-kilometer 2D seismic program in 2025. The company plans to drill an exploration well within 12 months. “We need to shoot seismic data and fill the gaps where we have interesting prospects,” explained Corcel COO Richard Lane at AOG 2025. Nigeria’s Oando Energy Resources grabbed Block KON 13 in 2025, gaining access to an asset with estimated prospective resources between 770 million and 1.1 billion barrels. Meanwhile, Canadian independent MTI Energy operates Blocks KON 5, KON 17, and KON 20, while Angola’s national oil company explores KON 11, 12, and 15.
The Lower Congo Basin is equally hot. Etu Energias—which has closed $1 billion in M&A deals since 2022—is targeting 80,000 barrels per day by 2030 across Blocks FS, FSST, CON 4, and CON 1. ACREP is preparing an exploration program at Cabinda Norte and Cabinda Sul, while Nigeria’s Walcot Energy secured operatorship of Blocks CON 3 and CON 7, sitting on over 2 billion barrels of prospective resources.
The real frontier action is in the Etosha-Okavango basin, where ReconAfrica recently raised C$32 million to fund geochemical sampling and potential 2D seismic in the Damara Fold Belt. Field crews are expected to mobilize in April 2026, with the company touting “strong investor demand” as proof of confidence in frontier basin potential. Angola’s onshore revival is no longer a dream—it’s an independent-led exploration boom in motion.
