Algeria’s state energy giant Sonatrach has broadened its footprint in Niger through a cluster of new cooperation agreements that simultaneously target upstream drilling, geophysical exploration, and fuel distribution — signalling a strategic deepening of the two countries’ energy ties.

Sonatrach’s drilling subsidiary ENAFOR and Niger’s state petroleum company SONIDEP signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint venture for oil and gas drilling operations in Niger. The agreement sets the framework for ENAFOR to deploy its operational expertise within the Nigerien upstream sector, where exploration activity is expected to accelerate under the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project currently gaining momentum.

In a parallel accord, Sonatrach geophysics subsidiary ENAGEO and SONIDEP agreed to cooperate on seismic data acquisition and processing across Niger — a foundational capability that will directly support hydrocarbon exploration campaigns across the country’s underexplored basins.

A third agreement, between fuel distribution subsidiary NAFTAL and SONIDEP, covers a broader commercial agenda: petroleum product distribution, filling centre development, staff training, and the creation of a joint venture for bitumen manufacturing, distribution and storage — an area of particular importance for Niger’s infrastructure development needs.

Taken together, the three agreements represent a vertically integrated push by Algeria into Niger’s energy sector, spanning the full value chain from underground exploration to refined product distribution — and positioning Sonatrach as a key enabler of Niger’s upstream ambitions.
