Egypt’s petroleum minister conducts hands-on inspection of the national gas control centre as temperatures and electricity needs prepare to peak

Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, has conducted a detailed review of the national natural gas grid’s operational readiness ahead of the summer season, visiting the National Advanced Transmission and Automation Center (NATA) at the headquarters of the Egyptian Natural Gas Company (GASCO) in Cairo.

During the inspection, Badawi assessed the consistency of energy supplies from domestic production, the performance of regasification units injecting imported LNG into the national grid, and the availability of petroleum fuels required for power stations. The Minister confirmed that operations are being carried out according to proactive contingency scenarios prepared to address any sudden changes in consumption rates — supported by continuous coordination with Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, and teams from both ministries.

Badawi highlighted the success of the previous summer, during which a record consumption of 40,000 megawatts of electricity was met, citing the experience as proof of the importance of early planning and cross-ministerial collaboration in securing energy and fuel needs for citizens, service sectors, and industrial operations.

During discussions with GASCO Chairman Mohamed Marzouk, Badawi reviewed the current status of national gas grid operations and preparations for the coming period, with the official start of summer a month away. NATA, which operates as a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system, consists of 12 control workstations and is backed by a standby control centre in Suez to monitor and manage the national gas network.
