Libyan technical teams at Mellitah Oil and Gas Company have completed a remarkable feat of reservoir engineering at the Abu Attifel oil field, cutting the water content of well A-28 from 87 per cent to zero while quadrupling its oil output — the third such operational success the team has achieved in under three months.

The National Oil Corporation (NOC) confirmed that crews isolated the well’s associated water-bearing layers and re-perforated the reservoir as part of a targeted programme to improve well efficiency and lift production rates across the field. Before the intervention, the well was producing just 580 barrels of oil per day while simultaneously pushing nearly 5,000 barrels of unwanted water to surface daily — a ratio that made the well barely viable.

After the operation was completed, oil production surged to 2,490 barrels per day on the same 56/64 choke size, with a wellhead pressure of 1,897 psi recorded and no associated water whatsoever — a water cut reduction from 87 per cent to zero per cent.

The NOC said the results reflect the success of the implemented technical solutions and the efficiency of Libyan work teams in executing high-standard operations, contributing to improved production performance and better utilisation of the reservoir. The back-to-back successes at Abu Attifel signal a growing confidence in Libya’s ability to maximise output from its existing fields using domestic technical expertise.
