Egypt’s Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi has met with Pascal Breant, Managing Director of TotalEnergies for Egypt and Cyprus, to review progress on a gas transport project that would link the offshore Cypriot Cronos field to Egypt’s existing natural gas liquefaction facilities — a deal both sides describe as a model for regional energy integration.
The project, which is being developed in partnership with Italian major Eni, will pipe gas from Cyprus’s offshore Block 6, where TotalEnergies holds a 50% operated interest in a joint arrangement with Eni, to Egyptian infrastructure for processing and export as liquefied natural gas.
In October 2025, Egypt and Cyprus signed a series of commercial agreements to develop the Cronos field, with those accords serving as a major catalyst for the project’s Final Investment Decision. According to the Middle East Economic Survey, the deal has further cemented Egypt’s standing as the primary energy hub for the Eastern Mediterranean — a strategic positioning that Cairo has been investing heavily to secure.
During the meeting, Badawi and Breant discussed the next phase of implementation, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to a partnership that maximises the value of Cypriot gas resources while leveraging Egypt’s established export infrastructure.
