Nigeria’s national oil company, NNPC Limited, has completed the mainline welding works on the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) gas pipeline, one of Nigeria’s most ambitious energy infrastructure projects, according to the company’s December 2025 monthly report.

The 614-kilometre pipeline is a major segment of the national gas expansion strategy designed to transport natural gas from southern Nigeria to demand centres in the north, where industrial and power generation capacity is expected to grow significantly.

With welding complete, attention has now shifted to the installation of Intermediate Pigging Stations (IPS) and Block Valve Stations (BVS) — critical components required for the safe and efficient operation of the pipeline. Energy experts say the project could significantly boost industrialisation in northern Nigeria once fully operational.

NNPC also reported progress on the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) Gas Pipeline, with work on the River Niger crossing segment now advancing into the pilot hole drilling stage after the completion of early engineering works. Together, these projects form part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to improve domestic gas utilisation and transport its abundant natural gas reserves to underserved areas of the country.
