In a meaningful step for both the companies and the host nation, TotalEnergies, QatarEnergy and Petronas have secured a five-year production-sharing agreement with the government of Guyana to explore the shallow-water Block S4, located some 50 km to 100 km off the South American country’s coast.
Under the deal, TotalEnergies will operate with a 40% working interest, while the government of Guyana received a US$15 million signing/entrance bonus for the block rights.
Guyana’s energy minister emphasized that each partnership must be “win-win” underlining the hope the country holds for diversified growth beyond its current oil-and-gas base.
For the three companies, this move not only expands their upstream footprints but also signals their willingness to share in the aspirations of a smaller nation, bringing instincts of long-term collaboration into what might otherwise be a strictly commercial exercise.
Looking ahead, the government expects to finalize agreements for at least two additional offshore zones this year, signaling a broader ambition to bring fresh investment and exploration energy into Guyana’s waters.
