Shell is promising a major turnaround in Nigeria’s deepwater exploration, saying its Bonga North deepwater project will bring about a transformation in the country’s quest to mark up production capacity.

Executive Vice President Nigeria and Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria, Marno de Jong, said the company has powered progress in Nigeria for over 60 years through its businesses and social investments. “The Final Investment Decisions on Bonga North and HI projects underscore our commitment to the development of the country,” he stated.

The project will boost Nigeria’s oil production by adding a projected peak of 110,000 barrels of oil per day once it comes online by the end of the decade. This is achieved through a subsea tie-back to the existing Bonga FPSO facility which includes drilling 16 new wells and modifying the existing FPSO to increase its capacity.

The project involves a significant investment and is located in OML 118, about 130 kilometers offshore Nigeria. It is expected to reach a peak production of 110,000 barrels of oil per day and hold an estimated 300 million barrels of oil equivalent in recoverable resources. The development will involve drilling and completing 16 new wells and installing new subsea hardware to connect to the existing Bonga FPSO.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri and Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa were among dignitaries who engaged with Shell representatives, where Senior Production Geoscientist and Subsurface Integrator, Abidemi Belgore conducted visitors through presentations featuring Shell’s footprints in deep-water production, domestic gas distribution and empowerment of businesses through provision of renewable energy and other power solutions.
