under 18 steeplechase girls final
50 athletes have been selected to represent the country in the 2nd Africa under 18 youth and under 20 junior Athletics championships scheduled later this month in Lusaka ,Zambia , after culmination of a two day national trials at the Nyayo national stadium.
2021 World under 20 bronze medalist in 3,000 Meters Nancy Cherop, East Africa 5,000 junior champions Diana Cherotich and Shadrack Rono are among the athletes who made the cut alongside other athletes who will be flying Kenyan flag for the 1st time.
According to the athletics Kenya Director of youth development, Barnaba Korir they have blended both experienced athletes and those who qualified for the 1st time as they target to retain the under 18 title which they won 3 years ago in Ivory Coast as well as winning the under 20 overall title.
“We have had a very successful two days championships and out of it we managed to select 50 athletes for the 2nd Africa Youth and junior championships in Lusaka Zambia. The team is a combination of both experienced athletes who were given wild cards and those qualified based on time. The reason for this is to ensure we retain the under 18 overall title which we won 3 year ago in Ivory Coast as well as winning the overall under 20 title.
After todays selection the athletes are expected to report to residential training at Kasarani on Wednesday, then depart for Lusaka on the 27th ,2 days before the championships kicks off” said Korir
