The suspension of Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara and declaration of a state of emergency is fundamentally against the spirit of federalism, Soyinka says. The veteran activist and Nobel laureate urges for the Nigerian constitution to be revised to limit the president’s power.

The Nigerian Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has reacted to the raging debate on President Bola Tinubu‘s decision to suspend Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara. Tinubu had earlier in the week imposed a state of emergency on the oil-rich state following the explosion of two pipelines, which was linked to the feud between Fubara and the state parliament loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike.
