TRAGEDY STRIKES AS THIRD WORKER DIES FOLLOWING CHEVRON ANGOLA PLATFORM INFERNO
The death toll from a devastating fire aboard a Chevron Corporation oil platform off Angola’s coast has climbed to three, marking a tragic escalation of the May 20 incident that rocked the offshore energy sector. Two workers who had been battling for their lives in South African medical facilities have succumbed to their injuries, with the first passing away on May 24 and the second on Tuesday, according to Angola’s Petroleum and Minerals Ministry.
The catastrophic blaze erupted on the cellar deck of CABGOC’s Benguela Belize Lobito Tomboco (BBLT) deepwater facility, strategically positioned in Block 14 offshore Cabinda, while the platform was undergoing routine scheduled maintenance. The incident left a total of 17 people injured, and authorities are currently working to recover a body that was spotted underwater near the platform, adding to the mounting concerns about the full extent of this maritime disaster.
Located approximately 60 miles off Angola’s coastline, the BBLT platform represents a critical component of the region’s deepwater oil production infrastructure. Chevron’s local operations unit has been working closely with government officials and providing comprehensive support to affected personnel and their families during this difficult period, as investigations continue into the cause of this tragic industrial accident.
