TotalEnergies is advancing a wide-ranging offshore growth strategy in Angola that combines new deepwater project development, brownfield optimisation, and frontier exploration — cementing the company’s position as one of the most active energy majors in sub-Saharan Africa’s offshore sector as Angola works to sustain national crude production above one million barrels per day.
At the heart of the strategy is the Kaminho deepwater project in the Kwanza Basin, for which TotalEnergies reached a final investment decision in 2024. The approximately $6-billion development is expected to produce around 70,000 barrels per day through a purpose-built Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessel designed with lower-emission technologies, with startup targeted for 2028.
TotalEnergies also recently signed a principles agreement with Angola’s National Oil, Gas & Biofuels Agency to extend the Block 32 licence through 2043. The block includes the Kaombo development and six currently producing fields offshore Angola, ensuring continuity of production from one of the country’s most prolific deepwater assets for decades to come.
In March, TotalEnergies signed an agreement with ExxonMobil and Angola’s upstream regulator ANPG covering four offshore blocks in the Benguela and Namibe basins — Blocks 40, 41, 42, and 58 — adding additional frontier exploration exposure. The company is also participating in studies evaluating further opportunities in the free areas of the mature producing offshore areas Blocks 17/06 and 32/21.
TotalEnergies expanded its Angolan production portfolio in 2025 through the startup of the Begonia and CLOV Phase 3 offshore developments, which together added approximately 60,000 barrels per day. The company said these projects reflect its broader strategy of balancing new exploration with redevelopment and optimisation of existing offshore infrastructure across Angola’s deepwater sector.
