MTWARA — Tanzania is gearing up for a natural gas production surge, as French energy firm Maurel & Prom prepares to drill three new wells at Mnazi Bay starting June 2025.
The move, backed by a $80 million investment, is expected to add 30 million cubic feet/day to the nation’s output—raising capacity to 130 MMcf/d from the current 100 MMcf/d.
“With all approvals in place from the Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (Pura), drilling is scheduled to continue through 2026,” said Hussein Chitemo, the company’s Production Superintendent.
Tanzania aims to meet growing domestic and regional energy needs, especially from countries like Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, and the DRC.
Boosting Energy Security:
- Key clients: TANESCO & Gasco
- Current national gas output: 177.18 MMcf/d
- Hydropower & natural gas remain top electricity sources
- 14 licenses issued for new CNG projects nationwide
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa also announced that the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Dam, contributing 2,115MW to the grid, helped push Tanzania’s total power generation to 4,031.7MW in March 2025.
With strategic energy projects underway, including nationwide rural fuel access initiatives, Tanzania is poised to become a regional powerhouse in sustainable energy.
