Somalia’s President Tours Turkish Oil Vessel as Historic Energy Partnership Takes Shape

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has conducted a high-profile tour of the Turkish oil exploration vessel Oruç Reis in Mogadishu, marking the official conclusion of its groundbreaking mission off the Somali coast and signaling a potential economic transformation for the Horn of Africa nation.

The vessel completed seismic surveys for oil and natural gas across three exploration areas where Turkey has secured licenses, following its arrival in October 2024. President Mohamud expressed unprecedented optimism about the results, stating they could “significantly transform Somalia’s economy and bolster cooperation between the two nations.”

During the inspection tour on Thursday, the President emphasized that this achievement reinforces Somalia’s objective to “fully harness its natural resources, transforming them into economic opportunities and social progress.” The survey represents part of a wider energy cooperation framework between Turkey and Somalia.

The partnership has already expanded beyond offshore exploration, with Turkey and Somalia signing an onshore hydrocarbon exploration and production agreement in April. This deal allows Turkish Petroleum (TPAO) to begin oil and gas exploration across three land blocks covering approximately 16,000 square kilometers, marking a new phase in bilateral cooperation.

President Mohamud noted that the responsible exploitation of natural resources is key to addressing Somalia’s current challenges, while praising Turkey for “demonstrating that Somalia is a viable country for investment.”
