Nigeria’s state oil company, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has issued an urgent public warning over a growing wave of fraud in which impostors are falsely claiming to act as company representatives in order to sell scrap metals and refinery equipment — assets the company says it has never put up for sale.

In a statement by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, NNPCL categorically denied authorising any sale of scrap materials, refinery components or equipment from any of its facilities. The company said it has received credible reports of individuals misrepresenting themselves as NNPCL agents to deceive members of the public and corporate organisations into illegal transactions.

“NNPC Limited is not conducting, nor has it authorised, any sale of scrap metals, equipment, or refinery components from any of its facilities,” the statement declared, urging the public, corporate organisations and industry stakeholders to disregard any such claims or solicitations and to exercise caution when dealing with anyone making such representations.

NNPCL added that any legitimate disposal of assets would only be carried out through established and transparent processes, publicly communicated through official channels and in strict compliance with applicable regulations. Members of the public who encounter such fraudulent solicitations are encouraged to report the matter to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
