M23 rebels are now in control of large swathes of territory near the provincial capital, Goma after a string of successful attacks.
The M23, which was formed a decade ago, claims to defend the interests of ethnic Tutsis living in DR Congo against Hutu militias.

Much of the recruitment took place across the North Kivu province.
It is unclear how long the training will take before the volunteers are deployed to the front lines.
