Malaysian national energy company Petronas has signed a landmark 20-year LNG supply deal with QatarEnergy, marking a strategic long-term collaboration between two major LNG producers. Under the agreement, QatarEnergy will supply 2 million metric tons of LNG annually to Petronas, securing reliable gas feedstock to support Malaysia’s power generation and industrial sectors.

The deal was unveiled during the LNG2026 conference in Doha, underscoring strengthening ties amidst a period of rapid LNG market evolution. It represents the first long-term supply pact between the two companies and complements QatarEnergy’s expanding export portfolio as it increases production under the North Field Expansion project.

Malaysia’s domestic gas demand has been rising steadily due to economic growth, data center expansion and electrification trends, while local upstream production has faced depletion pressures. The partnership with QatarEnergy is seen as a strategic hedge against supply volatility, ensuring stable LNG cargo flows for decades.

QatarEnergy is on track to scale LNG output from around 77 million tons per year today toward 126 million tons per year by 2027, reinforcing its position among the world’s top exporters. Industry observers say that long-term contracts like this help underpin financing for new liquefaction trains and assure buyers of capacity amidst an increasingly competitive market landscape.  Both companies have highlighted cooperation potential beyond supply, including technical exchange, joint market studies and potential collaboration in hydrogen value chains  moves consistent with broader energy transition strategies across Asia and the Gulf.
