The Nigerian Institution of Petroleum Engineers, formerly the Petroleum Division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, has unveiled plans to rebrand as the Nigerian Institute of Petroleum and Gas Engineers in a strategic move to enhance professionalism and drive growth in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

Prisca Kanebi, chairperson of NiPeTE, revealed this at a media conference in Lagos focused on the Institute’s renewed direction. “We are working towards a strategic, focused path that will positively impact Nigeria’s economic growth,” she stated.

Kanebi announced that after extensive consultations and in line with the evolving professional landscape, the organization has successfully upgraded its name with the Corporate Affairs Commission. The Institute has also secured approval from the National Technical Board for its certification programs and achieved a successful second reading of its bill at the National Assembly, with the date for public hearing to be announced soon.

The Chairperson called on all practicing petroleum engineers in Nigeria and the diaspora to register with the Institute, emphasizing that transitioning to a statutory body will further empower their contribution to national development.

Addressing recent controversies, Kanebi urged the public to disregard a disclaimer issued by a group allegedly attempting to undermine the Institute’s leadership, clarifying that the Society of Petroleum Engineers is not involved in this misrepresentation. “We have no issues within ourselves in the Industry, everything happening around are politically motivated by a few to hijack our system which is unfortunate,” she concluded.
