Ogun State is on the verge of joining Nigeria’s oil-producing states as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has completed a technical inspection of the Eba oil well in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area. The visit, which included representatives from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission and national security agencies, evaluated the site’s readiness for commercial drilling operations following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval for commercial exploration.

The NNPCL Enserv technical team, led by Project Coordinator Hussein Aliyu and comprising specialists in various fields, assessed the infrastructure and technical capacity required for production. Governor Dapo Abiodun described the development as a landmark achievement that would stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, and attract increased federal presence to the state’s coastal communities. Geological reports have confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons within the Ogun Waterside axis, and the state government conducted independent verification confirming the oil well’s coordinates fall within Ogun State’s boundaries. Naval security personnel have been deployed to protect the site for over 18 months with support from the state government.

The Eba oil well represents Nigeria’s strategic expansion of oil production beyond the traditional Niger Delta region, with stakeholders noting that the next phase will focus on regulatory compliance, community relations, environmental protection, and the smooth commencement of commercial operations. The development underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to the development of frontier oil basins and the equitable distribution of Nigeria’s energy resources across the country.
