Nigeria Launches Massive $25 Billion Gas Pipeline Project to Supply Europe
In a groundbreaking development that could reshape West African energy exports, Nigeria has announced plans for a massive $25 billion gas pipeline connecting its vast gas reserves directly to European markets via Morocco. Vice President Kashim Shettima confirmed the ambitious project during high-level discussions with global energy trader Vitol, describing it as a critical strategic initiative for the nation’s energy future.
The extraordinary 5,660-kilometer pipeline will traverse the coastline of 13 West African countries, creating an unprecedented direct export route for Nigerian gas resources with a massive capacity of 30 billion cubic meters. Production is targeted to begin in 2029, positioning Nigeria as a major alternative energy supplier to Europe amid ongoing global energy security concerns.
“We are seriously exploring the option of taking our gas to Europe. It is an expensive venture requiring about $25 billion, and of course, the technical expertise,” Shettima stated, emphasizing that gas supply stability is driving this massive infrastructure investment. The UAE has already committed to help finance the project, with additional funding expected from the European Investment Bank, Islamic Development Bank, and OPEC Fund.
