Mozambique’s Minister of Transport, Mateus Magala, announced a groundbreaking flight between Lanseria, South Africa, and Xai-Xai, in Gaza, providing a “viable” alternative for miners.
The flight aims to ease the challenges faced by miners during border crossings and offers a quicker connection for South African tourists seeking Mozambique’s beaches.
The dedicated route transported around 180 Mozambican mine workers on its inaugural day, alleviating the struggles faced during border queues, especially during festive seasons. Belmiro Munguambe, a miner since 1990, expressed relief, stating that the flight provides a faster and safer alternative to land travel, which often involves long waiting times and security risks.
In response to the needs of miners, Mozambique Airlines (LAM) has increased the baggage limit to 46 kilos per passenger and secured an agreement for the transportation of miners’ goods to their homes.
Minister Magala expressed plans to increase flight frequency and urged initiatives to attract more traffic to Filipe Jacinto Nyusi Airport, emphasizing the potential for business opportunities provided by the new route.
Filipe Jacinto Nyusi Airport, inaugurated in 2021, has seen minimal commercial activity until this LAM operation, which marks a significant step in the airport’s utilization. Gaza province, now LAM’s third destination in South Africa, holds promise for future initiatives benefiting from regular air transport availability.
As LAM continues its revitalization plan under the management of Fly Modern Ark (FMA), Minister Magala acknowledged the progress achieved and emphasized the ongoing commitment to reforms, aiming for increased efficiency.
LAM’s ambitious goal to double its aircraft fleet by 2027 reflects a commitment to expanding its services and contributing to enhanced regional connectivity.
