Six reservoir zones, two global oilfield giants, and a 60-day clock — Namibia’s most anticipated production test is days away
ReconAfrica and its partners — Namibia’s state-owned NAMCOR and offshore independent BW Energy — are on the verge of beginning downhole production testing at the Kavango West 1X (KW1X) well in Namibia, with operations expected to commence before the end of May 2026.
The company confirmed that all equipment and field services for the production test have arrived on location, with technical field operations to be overseen by global oilfield service providers SLB and Halliburton. Before testing begins, a cement bond log will be conducted to verify casing and cement integrity, while a third-party contractor completes transport and storage permits required for the downhole testing program.
The production test will evaluate six optimised zones across approximately 420 metres of hydrocarbon-bearing intervals identified at the Kavango discovery — the first multi-zone production test of this scale in Namibia. Testing of a single zone is estimated to take up to 10 days, placing the full campaign at around 60 days. Initial results are anticipated by mid-to-late July 2026.
ReconAfrica said it continues to advance appraisal drilling plans across the broader Kavango discovery area, with site selection and permitting activities currently underway for the next appraisal well. The company stated that all operations are being conducted in accordance with Namibia’s regulatory and permitting requirements.
