In a significant development for Africa’s green energy sector, Namibia’s HyIron Oshivela plant has successfully produced green hydrogen, leapfrogging South Africa in the race for green steel production. Commercial production of direct reduced iron ore (DRI) is expected to begin by late April 2025.

“With a planned start in late 2025, Oshivela will be one of the biggest primary production sites of green iron worldwide,” said Damian Howard, senior vice-president of energy at DMG Events.

The environmental impact is substantial, with the project expected to avoid 27,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually—equivalent to 50% of Namibia’s power industry emissions.

This development comes despite South Africa’s R319-billion commitment from Just Energy Transition funds to developing its hydrogen economy. Experts attribute Namibia’s success to political will, an investor-friendly climate, and focused planning.
