Mozambique’s and Germany’s governments signed a €500,000 financing agreement on Friday in Maputo to develop the -Green Hydrogen Project- in the African country. The project aims to diversify Mozambique’s energy matrix.
“The promotion of green hydrogen in Mozambique can help diversify the energy supply, create job opportunities and boost the development of industries and infrastructure for the Mozambican people,” said Ronald Munch, Germany’s ambassador to Mozambique, quoted in a joint statement.
The agreement for developing the -Green Hydrogen Project- was signed yesterday between Eletricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and the German Development Bank (KFW), which provided the money.
For the German ambassador, Mozambique has abundant natural resources, including water, solar and wind energy, which provide “good conditions” for the production of green hydrogen, in a project for which an international tender will be launched.
“The study will last around six to nine months and, based on the results obtained, we will start using this environmentally friendly technology, as the country has vast natural resources for this purpose,” said Joaquim Ou-chim, chairman of EDM’s board of directors.
The € 500,000 will be used to hire specialised consultants to conduct market studies for green hydrogen initiatives. Green hydrogen is considered a “fundamental” natural and energy resource in the process of diversifying Mozambique’s energy matrix.
“The aim is to ensure that we can export part of this natural resource and its by-products, such as oxygen and ammonia, both of which are essential for the development of agricultural fertilisers,” said Mozambique’s National Energy Director, Marcelina Mataveia, mentioning the “technical and economic viability” of green hydrogen, to ensure energy in the country and for its exploitation in other sectors.
