Sasol’s cooking gas production factory in Temane, Inhambane province, is now 80% complete and scheduled to open in September 2025. The South African petrochemical company’s project, which began construction in 2022, faced significant delays due to post-election protests that erupted in October 2024, forcing a temporary halt to construction activities.

Once operational, the facility will produce 30,000 tons of cooking gas annually, satisfying 70% of Mozambique’s domestic demand. This development is expected to improve both the price and availability of cooking gas for consumers throughout the country. The $600 million project extends beyond just cooking gas production; it will also produce light oil and supply natural gas to the Temane Thermal Power Plant, which will generate 450 megawatts of electricity.

The project is the result of a production-sharing agreement and involves multiple companies, including several Mozambican-owned businesses. Of the total $600 million budget, $72 million was specifically earmarked for companies owned by Mozambicans, highlighting the project’s commitment to local economic development.
