Mozambique and Eni Strengthen Energy Partnership with Focus on LNG Expansion
Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo met with Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi in Maputo to review current and upcoming projects, including LNG expansion, agribusiness, and sustainability initiatives. The meeting highlighted the remarkable success of the Coral South Project, which contributed 50% of Mozambique’s GDP growth in 2023 and is expected to drive 70% of growth in 2024.
Discussions centered on the newly approved Coral North floating LNG project, which will expand LNG production in the Rovuma Basin, and Eni’s plans for a biofuel-focused agribusiness initiative supporting rural development and job creation. The Italian energy giant’s broader commitment to Mozambique includes carbon offset programs featuring clean cooking and forest degradation reduction initiatives.
The partnership demonstrates Eni’s dedication to promoting sustainable development while capitalizing on Mozambique’s significant natural gas reserves. The Coral South Project’s success has positioned Mozambique as a key player in the global LNG market, with the Coral North expansion expected to further strengthen this position.
