Tripoli, Libya – Libya’s National Oil Corporation has formally joined the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership, a United Nations-backed initiative aimed at reducing methane gas emissions from petroleum operations, marking a significant step in the North African nation’s environmental commitment.

NOC Chairman Masoud Suleiman signed the agreement, making Libya’s state oil company an official member of the group operating under the supervision of the United Nations Environment Programme. The corporation announced that the move reflects its commitment to internationally adopted environmental conventions and treaties while strengthening UN efforts to curb emissions.

The partnership signing supports the NOC’s cooperation agreements with global companies, international organizations, the European Union, and the World Bank. The agreement forms part of the corporation’s broader efforts to reduce emissions and gas flaring while enhancing international cooperation to improve operational performance and environmental protection.

Methane, a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential significantly higher than carbon dioxide over shorter time periods, has become a priority target for climate action in the oil and gas sector. The OGMP framework provides technical guidance and reporting standards to help participating companies measure, report, and reduce methane emissions across their operations.
