Moscow and Cairo Discuss Construction of Strategic Gas Export Terminals
Russia and Egypt are advancing discussions to construct liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals in Egypt, according to Russian Industry and Trade Minister Anton Alikhanov. The announcement signals a potential deepening of energy cooperation between Moscow and Cairo at a time of shifting global energy alliances.
“Projects to build LNG terminals are being discussed,” Alikhanov told reporters following a high-level Russian-Egyptian intergovernmental commission meeting on Wednesday. “The work is underway,” he added, without providing specific details about the scale, location, or timeline for the proposed facilities.
The potential development of new LNG infrastructure in Egypt comes as the North African nation works to capitalize on its strategic position as an energy hub connecting Middle Eastern and Mediterranean gas resources to European markets. For Russia, cooperation on Egyptian LNG projects could provide an alternative export pathway as traditional European markets become increasingly challenging.
Energy analysts note that such collaboration would mark a significant expansion of Russia-Egypt relations beyond their traditional diplomatic and military cooperation. The development of new LNG terminals would potentially transform Egypt’s role in global gas markets while providing Russia with additional export options during a period of geopolitical realignment in energy trade.
