Kenya’s President William Ruto deleted a tweet revoking Kenya’s long-standing recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) following a meeting with Morocco Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
“Kenya rescinds its recognition of the SADR and initiates steps to wind down the entity’s presence in the country,” Mr Ruto had said on Twitter a day after being sworn in as Kenya’s fifth president.
He also expressed support for the UN framework overseeing the dispute over Western Sahara, which has historically been claimed by Morocco and the Sahrawi independence movement, Polisario Front.SADR President Brahim Ghali was among the leaders who attended Ruto’s inauguration ceremony on 13 September.Western Sahara is recognised by the African Union.
