The Prime Minister of Mozambique, Adriano Maleiane, chaired last Friday the 4th high-level coordination committee session aimed at removing Mozambique from the grey list.
Following last year’s decision by the Financial Action Task Force (GAFI) to include Mozambique in the list of jurisdictions under enhanced monitoring, known as the “grey list,” the meeting demonstrates the country’s commitment at the highest level. Present were the Supreme Court, the Attorney General, the Minister of Economy and Finance, the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Justice, the Minister of Land and Environment, the Vice Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, along with top officials from the involved sectors.
The meeting’s objective was to share the results of the assessment of the second progress report approved at the International Cooperation Review Group (ICRG) plenary on October 24 in Paris. It also included presenting the ICRG schedule for the third Progress Report and highlighting the activities carried out by the sectors, the challenges faced, and the priority actions to achieve effectiveness.
According to the presentation, the GAFI acknowledged Mozambique’s strong commitment and tremendous efforts to finalize the Action Plan. As a result of the assessment, GAFI decided to continue reviewing the country under ICRG monitoring rather than applying countermeasures.
Mozambique is scheduled to present two critical reports to GAFI, in December and April 2024, emphasizing effectiveness to complete the proposed action plan.
Should Mozambique fail to satisfactorily meet the action plan, the country might remain on the grey list, and countermeasures could be imposed by the GAFI.
Mozambique’s next presentation to GAFI, dubbed “Face to Face,” is set to take place on January 6, 2024, in the United Arab Emirates.
