Danish renewable energy firm GreenGo Energy has entered into an agreement with Mauritania’s Ministry of Energy and Petroleum to develop the Megaton Moon Green Hydrogen Project.
Under this agreement, GreenGo Energy has secured access to over 100,000 hectares of land near Nouakchott, initiating the project’s development phase. This phase will include site and geotechnical surveys, meteorological data collection, and feasibility assessments.
The Megaton Moon project is designed to establish 6 GW of electrolysis capacity, 6.8 GW of onshore wind power, and 6.3 GWp of solar energy. The development will proceed in phases, with the first stage targeted for completion by the end of 2029.
“This agreement reflects the private sector’s unwavering confidence in Mauritania’s green hydrogen potential, despite uncertainties in global demand,” said Mohamed Khaled, Mauritania’s Minister of Energy and Petroleum.
According to Karstein Nielsen, CEO of GreenGo Hydrogen, the project will capitalize on Mauritania’s abundant renewable resources, strategic location, and supportive energy policies to provide competitive production costs, thereby advancing the global green hydrogen economy.
Anders Heine Jensen, Head of PtX at GreenGo Energy, emphasized the project’s broader benefits, stating that it will enhance energy security, support local communities, improve water access for agriculture, and contribute to the industrial production of green steel in Mauritania.
The Megaton Moon initiative represents GreenGo Energy’s first major green hydrogen project in Africa and is poised to play a crucial role in the region’s sustainable energy development.
