Tema Oil Refinery Managing Director Dr. Yussif Sulemana has described Ghana’s proposed Petroleum Hub project as a game-changing initiative that could finally connect the country’s upstream oil production with its downstream refining and distribution sectors.

Speaking on the sidelines of an inter-agency dialogue in Accra, Dr. Sulemana highlighted the current disconnect in Ghana’s energy ecosystem. “If you observe the energy space, there’s been some segregation, there’s not much synergy between the upstream and downstream sectors,” he explained. “Now, we are working assiduously to close that gap, and I think this Petroleum Hub will be able to do that.”

Dr. Sulemana emphasized that merely being an oil producer with refining capacity isn’t enough without strategic linkage between production and refined product imports. He pointed to the economic benefits of reducing Ghana’s heavy dependence on imported fuel, noting that the country currently spends between $350 million to $400 million monthly on petroleum product imports.

“If we manage to develop this hub and refine more locally, you can imagine the positive impact it’s going to have on our local currency,” he added.

The Petroleum Hub, a cornerstone of Ghana’s energy infrastructure agenda, is expected to include refineries, petrochemical plants, storage facilities, and logistics services to position Ghana as a regional energy center in West Africa.
