Portuguese energy company Galp has confirmed a significant oil and gas discovery at the Mopane-3X well in Namibia’s offshore PEL 83 license. The well was successfully drilled, cored, and logged, yielding promising results.
The drilling campaign targeted two stacked prospects, AVO-10 and AVO-13, along with a deeper sand reservoir at depths of up to 1,200 meters. Preliminary data confirmed:
- Large columns of light oil and gas condensate within high-quality sandstones.
- Light oil columns in AVO-13 and deeper intervals.
Samples have been sent for laboratory analysis, and a 3D seismic survey is underway, expected to conclude in Q1 2025. The Mopane field is estimated to hold at least 10 billion barrels of oil and gas equivalent.
Galp, which holds an 80% stake in PEL 83, is considering selling half of its stake to a new operator.
