FRENCH CONTRACTOR GEOCEAN ADVANCES CONGO LNG PROJECT WITH CRITICAL MOORING SYSTEM INSTALLATION
French marine contractor GEOCEAN has successfully completed a vital phase in the installation of a sophisticated mooring system for a floating liquefied natural gas unit operating offshore Congo. The achievement represents significant progress in Eni’s Congo LNG project within the Marine XII block, bringing the ambitious development closer to full operational capacity.
The complex operation involved precise placement of a drilling guide template, followed by comprehensive diver inspections to ensure proper alignment and safety standards in the challenging offshore environment. This critical milestone followed the March 2025 deployment of the jack-up barge La Sianna, which was strategically positioned to serve as a stable work platform for the intricate installation procedures.
A massive 57-meter casing weighing 167 tons was successfully transported to the offshore site via platform supply vessel and carefully positioned within the drilling template. This positioning enabled the commencement of drilling operations and anchor pile installation, with three anchor piles now in place to complete the mooring system’s foundation structure, preparing it to support the incoming FLNG unit.
The Congo LNG project achieved a significant milestone in February 2024 when it began exports using the Tango FLNG unit. The comprehensive development plan includes deployment of two FLNG units at the Nenè and Litchendjili fields, with the second unit currently under construction and expected to commence operations by the end of 2025, further expanding Congo’s LNG export capabilities.
