Federal Government Seals Major Gas Infrastructure Deals Worth Billions
In a landmark move to accelerate Nigeria’s gas revolution, the Federal Government has signed comprehensive agreements with ten companies for the construction of gas processing plants and critical supply infrastructure, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s Decade of Gas initiative.
The joint venture investment agreements were formalized in Abuja between the Midstream and Downstream Infrastructure Fund (MDIF) and ten gas infrastructure promoters, including Ant Energy Limited, Sub Sea 9 Gas, Waterdance International Concepts, and LNG Arete.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo described the deals as a reflection of the government’s alignment of national priorities with practical action, demonstrating profound dedication to fostering growth, enhancing energy security, and building a resilient economy for future generations.
The comprehensive package includes six gas processing plants designed to produce marketable natural gas in liquefied and other forms to increase domestic supply capacity, three compressed natural gas refueling infrastructures to deepen domestic utilization for mobility and industrial applications, and one bulk liquefied petroleum gas storage infrastructure to minimize supply chain constraints.
In the first year of the current administration, the MDGIF has already supported six companies within the midstream and downstream space, promoting innovation and efficiency in gas processing, distribution, and utilization. These partnerships are expected to create integrated gas infrastructure that bridges long-standing gaps hindering sectoral progress.
Simultaneously, the government launched Project CNG Sprout, an ambitious initiative to establish CNG conversion and refueling infrastructures across 20 universities nationwide. This MDIF-funded project will provide CNG-powered buses and tricycles for student and staff transportation, offering a more affordable and environmentally friendly mobility solution.
Executive Director of MDIF, Oluwole Adama, emphasized that these advancements will create ripple effects across multiple industries, from agriculture to manufacturing and digital innovation, demonstrating how a robust gas sector impacts far beyond energy production.
