ExxonMobil Expresses Optimism for Mozambique’s Mega Gas Project

ExxonMobil’s director of liquefied natural gas operations has expressed strong optimism about the engineering progress of the company’s mega-project planned for northern Mozambique. Justin Cloutier announced that the company is currently working on the design phase and expects positive results from the significant energy and effort being invested in the project.

The Rovuma LNG project, located in Cabo Delgado province, initially estimated production of 15.2 million tonnes of gas per year but has since been revised upward to 18 million tonnes. ExxonMobil selected American company McDermott in October to lead a consortium for the engineering design, with up to 16 months allocated for completing the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) phase.

The project consortium includes Italy’s Eni and China National Petroleum Corporation, which together hold a 70% stake in the Area 4 Exploration and Production Concession Agreement. ExxonMobil’s general manager in Mozambique has suggested that the final investment decision could be made by the end of 2025, potentially making it the largest liquefied natural gas project in Africa and possibly the largest project in African history.
