South Africa’s power utility Eskom has launched a public Invitation to Tender seeking partners to establish an independent renewable energy subsidiary. The utility is looking for firms with proven experience in establishing and scaling renewable energy ventures as it moves to diversify the country’s energy portfolio.

The new business unit will operate separately from Eskom’s core operations, a strategic decision the utility says will strengthen governance, attract private-sector participation, and enhance market responsiveness. This initiative aligns with Eskom’s broader vision of creating an integrated energy mix combining traditional power sources like coal, nuclear, and gas with clean technologies.

Eskom has revealed it already possesses a 2 GW portfolio of clean energy projects scheduled for delivery by 2026, with an additional 20 GW in development to support long-term energy security and meet South Africa’s growing demand.

The tender remains open until 10:00 SAST on May 7, 2025. Prospective bidders must demonstrate expertise in Independent Power Producer models, Public-Private Partnerships, Special Purpose Vehicles, and both financial and technical structuring.
