Eni Ghana Launches Major Offshore Drilling Operation with World’s Most Advanced Drillship
Eni Ghana has commenced a groundbreaking offshore drilling campaign using the state-of-the-art Deep Value Driller, marking a pivotal moment for Ghana’s energy sector development.
The Italian energy giant, partnering with Vitol Upstream Ghana Ltd and Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), has officially started the Sankofa East 1X Side Track 2 drilling operation. The Deep Value Driller, fresh from completing operations in Côte d’Ivoire, represents one of the world’s most technologically advanced drillships, featuring cutting-edge automated systems that set new standards for operational performance and safety protocols.
This strategic initiative demonstrates the consortium’s unwavering commitment to maximizing value extraction from the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) block while ensuring sustainable long-term production capabilities that will significantly bolster Ghana’s energy security framework.
Prior to launching the campaign, Eni and its partners conducted extensive stakeholder engagement programs across Ghana’s coastal communities, involving over 800 fishermen and local leaders. These collaborative efforts were coordinated with key regulatory bodies including the Environmental Protection Agency, Petroleum Commission, Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana Navy, Fisheries Commission, and the Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council.
Since establishing operations in Ghana in 2009, Eni has maintained a strong presence in offshore hydrocarbon exploration and production, currently achieving equity production of approximately 34,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The company operates the OCTP project with a 44.4% ownership stake, while Vitol holds 35.6% and GNPC maintains 20% interest.
