Egypt has broken a two-year exploration dry spell with a series of new oil and natural gas discoveries across the Nile Delta, Western Desert, and Eastern Desert regions, adding over 5,000 barrels of oil and 42 million standard cubic feet of gas per day to the nation’s production capacity. The announcement marks a significant turning point for the country’s energy sector, which has been working aggressively to boost domestic production and reduce reliance on imports. In the onshore Nile Delta region, two natural gas discoveries were made for the first time in two years. Harbour Energy made the first strike through Disouq Petroleum Company after drilling the North Sidi Ghazy 1-9 exploration well, while UAE-based Dana Gas achieved success through El Wastani Petroleum Company in the West Qantara area with the Salma Delta-6 well. Both discoveries are being prepared for production with a combined estimated output of 19 million standard cubic feet of gas daily.

The Western Desert proved equally productive, with Khalda Petroleum Company making several new discoveries, including the SHAI-3X and WD 33J-1X wells, which have been connected to the production network with total output exceeding 3,550 barrels of crude oil and 23 million cubic feet of gas per day. Agiba Petroleum Company contributed the Dorra-44 discovery producing over 500 barrels daily, while General Petroleum Company added the GPU-1X discovery in the Abu Senan area, now producing 350 barrels per day. Petrosannan Petroleum Company also struck success in the East Alam El Shawish area through well HG34/1 D-1X, connected to production with output of approximately 1,000 barrels of oil daily.

The success rate has been impressive, with 13 of 18 new oil and gas discoveries made since July already brought into production, contributing a daily output of 14,000 barrels of oil and condensates and 44 million cubic feet of natural gas. Ministry officials noted that the application of artificial intelligence technologies contributed significantly to the success of several wells, while the discoveries have encouraged operating companies to test deeper geological formations that were previously untapped.

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi emphasized that the new discoveries align with ongoing efforts to boost domestic production and lower the country’s import bill.
