The Republic of Congo has achieved a major milestone in its energy sector transformation by commencing exports from Phase 2 of its Congo LNG project, effectively doubling the nation’s liquefaction capacity and cementing its status as an emerging force in the global LNG market. The second phase, operated by Italian energy major Eni, features the newly commissioned Nguya FLNG facility and elevates total project capacity to approximately 3 million metric tons per year.

In a remarkable demonstration of project execution efficiency, the first cargo from the expanded development shipped in early 2026 following commissioning of the new unit ahead of its original timeline. Phase 2 builds upon the foundation established by the earlier Tango FLNG installation and substantially expands processing and export capabilities tied to gas produced from the offshore Nené and Litchendjili fields located within the Marine XII license area.

The accelerated project delivery arrives at an opportune moment as global energy buyers actively seek diversified gas supply sources amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties affecting traditional suppliers. Beyond the LNG expansion, Congo’s offshore sector continues to witness robust upstream activity, with TotalEnergies recently securing the Nzombo exploration permit that includes an ambitious drilling program, while Perenco advances redevelopment work at the Kombi-Likalala-Libondo II field to sustain production levels and enhance gas recovery efficiency.

The LNG expansion reflects Congo’s comprehensive strategy to monetize its substantial offshore gas resources and strengthen export capacity through cutting-edge floating liquefaction infrastructure combined with strategic upstream development initiatives. The country has positioned natural gas and LNG as cornerstone elements of its future energy sector growth trajectory and export revenue generation.
