In a historic surge, Nigeria’s domestic refining output skyrocketed by an astonishing 670% in April 2025, significantly reducing reliance on imported petrol.
At the Meet-the-Press briefing in Abuja, NMDPRA CEO Farouk Ahmed announced that Nigeria’s daily petrol importation plummeted from 44.6 million litres in August 2024 to just 14.7 million litres as of April 13, 2025. This milestone was achieved thanks to the revival of the Port Harcourt Refinery and increased contributions from modular refineries across the country.
Despite the surge in local refining, national petrol consumption remains above the 50 million litres daily benchmark, highlighting the continued demand pressures. Ahmed called for a united front from all stakeholders to protect Nigeria’s vital oil and gas infrastructure, stressing that security, maintenance, and transparency are key to sustaining the sector’s growth.
With rising domestic production and renewed focus on national energy assets, Nigeria’s dream of energy independence is inching closer to reality.
