The Egypt Upstream Gateway has opened the NW Al Amal Block in the Gulf of Suez for bidding under its Open Blocks Licensing Programme, with submissions accepted until September 7.

The programme, introduced by Egypt’s petroleum ministry in 2024, lets companies nominate and bid for unlicensed exploration blocks rather than waiting for a scheduled licensing round. The 440 square kilometre NW Al Amal Block has been explored since the 1960s and already carries 36 wells and 10 sidetracks.

Egypt Upstream Gateway estimates the block holds about 90 million barrels of oil in place, with upside potential exceeding 300 million barrels. The block sits close to several producing fields, including El Morgan, July, South Gharib and Ramadan, offering potential synergies for future development.
