Shell is gearing up to drill a second exploration well in Namibia’s Orange Basin, keeping the momentum going in a region that has quickly become one of the hottest frontiers in global oil exploration.

The basin has already delivered headline-grabbing finds for Shell, including its Graff and Jonker discoveries, and for TotalEnergies with its Venus find — collectively estimated to hold billions of barrels of oil equivalent. This second well is meant to help Shell nail down just how big, and how commercially viable, those existing discoveries really are, while also testing new prospects within its own acreage.

Because the finds sit in deep water, developing them will take serious capital and advanced engineering, and Namibia’s government is watching closely as it works to build out a regulatory framework and local content rules that ensure citizens actually benefit from the boom. The country is also weighing how to manage expectations and protect the environment as it navigates the complexities of large-scale offshore development.

Results from Shell’s second well will offer an early signal of just how transformative Namibia’s oil story could become for its economy.
