Egypt’s upstream gas sector is recording tangible gains as two separate companies successfully bring new wells into production, bolstering national output and expanding proven reserves.
In the Mediterranean Sea, the second well at the West El-Burullus (WEB) offshore field has been connected to the production system, lifting the field’s output from approximately 25 million cubic feet per day (mmcf/d) to 37 mmcf/d. The field is being developed through the PetroWeb joint venture, with Cheiron serving as operator and lead developer. Production is expected to climb beyond 70 mmcf/d following the imminent connection of a third well. A fourth well has already been drilled with promising results, with evaluation tests now being prepared. The field development plan also includes drilling two additional wells on the connected Papyrus platform.
In parallel, BAPETCO is advancing development of its concession areas in the Western Desert, successfully drilling the BED 15-35 well as part of the ongoing expansion of the BED 15-31 discovery. Production tests have returned rates of between 10 mmcf/d and 15 mmcf/d of natural gas, alongside condensate output of 300 to 650 barrels per day. The drilling has expanded proven reserves in the area from 15 billion cubic feet (bcf) to approximately 25 bcf. Four additional production wells are planned in the Badr El Din concession area.
The twin developments support Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ broader strategy to reduce the country’s energy import bill and strengthen national energy security.
