Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, convened a high-level meeting with representatives from leading international technology providers and service companies operating in Egypt — including SLB, Baker Hughes, Weatherford, National Energy Services Reunited Corporation (NESR), and Expro — to chart a course for transforming the country’s drilling and field development capabilities.
The meeting was held as part of the Ministry’s five-year plan to increase domestic production of crude oil and natural gas. Badawi announced that the Ministry has developed new contractual and technical models designed with the flexibility to accommodate modern technologies, with particular emphasis on horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. He ordered an immediate study of producing fields to identify their technological needs, stressing that these solutions must be underpinned by continuously updated geological data to maximise production outcomes.
Representatives from the international companies expressed readiness to deliver advanced technology packages proven globally, stating that a focus on hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, alongside accurate geological data, represents a qualitative leap in Egypt’s field development system. The initiative underscores Egypt’s growing urgency to ramp up domestic output as Mediterranean offshore exploration activity intensifies.
