Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, held discussions with Abang Yusuf, Senior Vice President for liquefied natural gas Assets at Malaysia’s Petronas, to strengthen their partnership in natural gas development with particular emphasis on the company’s investments in the West Delta Deep Marine fields and the Idku LNG complex.

The meeting reviewed cooperation areas and joint projects aimed at enhancing energy efficiency, operational capacity, and maximizing existing infrastructure to add value while supporting emissions reduction initiatives. Badawi praised Petronas’ role in Egypt’s energy sector and expressed hope for increased investments in natural gas exploration, citing promising opportunities in the country.

Abang Yusuf highlighted Petronas’ confidence in Egypt’s investment climate and described the partnership with Egypt’s petroleum sector as foundational to their operations in the West Delta Deep Marine fields in the Mediterranean. Both parties agreed to maintain close coordination to optimize economic and operational outcomes from their joint ventures.

The collaboration between Petronas and Egypt involves significant operations in partnership with Shell in the WDDM fields and the Idku LNG complex. In recent developments, Burullus Gas Company, operator of WDDM, brought two new offshore wells online in August, producing 60 million cubic feet per day of natural gas as part of the Phase 11 development plan of West Delta Deep Marine.

The strengthened partnership reflects Egypt’s strategy to maximize production from existing gas infrastructure while attracting continued foreign investment in exploration and development activities across its Mediterranean offshore acreage.
