The Republic of Congo has received a $1.5 million grant from the African Development Bank to modernize its energy infrastructure, expand electricity access, and address energy deficits. This funding supports the country’s electrification strategy aimed at achieving universal electricity access.

Gas Revolution

Congo’s national oil company, Société Nationale des Pétroles du Congo, will unveil its Gas Master Plan at the Congo Energy & Investment Forum (CEIF) 2025, scheduled for March 24-26 in Brazzaville. The plan focuses on gas monetization through infrastructure development, gas pipelines, processing facilities, and gas-to-power plants, reducing energy imports and increasing electricity access from its current 50% rate. Additionally, the Congolese government is set to finalize its Gas Code and establish a national gas company this year.

Expanding Renewable Energy

Congo is advancing its renewable energy initiatives with a new hydroelectric dam at Sounda, expected to generate between 600 MW and 800 MW upon completion. The $9.4 billion project, backed by China Overseas, marks a significant step in the country’s energy transition.

In collaboration with British company Bboxx, Congo has also launched a pilot project to distribute solar kits to remote areas in the Likouala region, aiming to provide sustainable energy to 10,000 households.

Congo is preparing for a significant boost in oil output, aiming to double production to 500,000 barrels per day by 2025. Major players, including TotalEnergies, Trident Energy, and Perenco, are leading key projects to unlock untapped reserves and enhance the country’s role as a top oil producer in Central Africa.
