Making an impact is a responsibility we all share. However, breaking free from the cliché of imitating others just to gain attention, a group of young individuals within the YALI Network Nigeria have distinguished themselves, spotlighting the realities, challenges, and strategies of engaging in the global business of sustainable development.
In this digital age, sustainability has become a subject of ongoing analysis, as everyone becomes more conscious of the complexities involved in bringing about the necessary changes. This highlights the vision of the YALI Network, centered on training and empowering African leaders to develop the skills and connections they need to become a positive force for change in their communities.
Undoubtedly, discussions surrounding impactful initiatives have prominently revolved around the younger generation. Their agility and commitment are essential in instigating transformations across various sectors. This is why youth-led businesses are not out of place. However, the challenges as it relates to business innovations persist, including concerns about the financial viability of investment-worthy projects, cultural nuances, inclusivity for individuals with disabilities, and the imperative alignment of these initiatives with genuine problems. Consequently, the necessity arises for funding initiatives, transparent strategic approaches, conciseness in articulating ideas, and a comprehensive grasp of the business landscape. Moreover, fostering connections and exhibiting the patience to endure the process are equally important. As the john Powell’s saying goes, “Growth is always a gradual process, a bridge slowly crossed and not a corner sharply turned.”
In establishing a lasting framework for a business venture or development project, the concept of sustainability takes center stage, as its hallmarks are expressed through goals and measurable impacts in data and figures. In taking action, Cynthia Mbamalu of Yiaga Africa says that certain questions are prominent: “What are the issues at hand? What data supports these issues? How can you contribute?” These questions form the basis of the value you bring to the table.
As digital access widens for youths, their potential to enhance skills and outreach expands. Attaining digital equity becomes pivotal for sustainable achievements. Reflecting on these possibilities, a 26-year-old HP representative, in her speech at the summit emphasizes self-driven capacity building, linking diligence and consistent engagement with knowledge to success.
The summit’s impact converges with innovation and sustainability to instill focused values. Participants like Florence Oyelade further noted the impact of the YALI initiatives. In her words, “the platform offers young people a chance to advocate for themselves and take ownership of their actions.”
Prioritizing people-centricism and collaborations is equally vital, as partnerships have become a tool for amplifying visibility, engagement, and support. As the head of the summit’s medical unit, Miss Lynnora’s experience showcases how partnerships aided in procuring resources for the summit’s successful medical endeavors. She said, “Leading the team was challenging, but the event’s theme, ‘Beyond Limits’, provided an opportunity to push boundaries, which I embraced. Sustainability involves the ability to consistently maintain and uphold the networks available to you.”
It remains a fact that an individual alone cannot change the entire world. However, within a specific community, one can wield a significant influence. This is why the call for creativity in promoting diversity and inclusion is on the rise, contributing to the consistent alignment of innovative solutions nationally and globally.
With the backing of the United States, through its accessibility initiatives, dedication to inclusion, and exchange programs, young Nigerians, through YALI Network are further empowered to actively engage in community building and democratic processes. This, in turn, dispels the long-standing notion of leadership, transforming it into a space where everyone can take meaningful action from where they are and with what they have.
