Abuja, 26/APRIL/2023

The Minister of Culture and Tourism of Angola, Filipe de Pina ZAU, is in
Nigeria to participate in the Symposium of the African Diaspora that starts
this Thursday, April 27, in Abuja, under the motto “Building stronger
Connections between Africa and the Global Diaspora”.
Angola participates in this Symposium to help build stronger connections
between Africa and the Diaspora and encourage the promotion of the
institutionalization of Pan-Africanism at the UN with the celebration of the
International Decade for People of African Descent.
The Angolan delegation includes specialists in cultural heritage, exchange,
jurisprudence and tourism development. The expectation of Minister Filipe
Zau is that the event will enhance the role of the Diaspora in the economic
and social development of Africa with remittances and philanthropic
contributions.
Minister ZAU wants to take advantage of the event to promote two
Angolan musical instruments, candidates for the cultural heritage of
humanity, which are the DIKANZA and the MARIMBA.

The Abuja symposium aims to explore and engage Diaspora skills
contributions with particular emphasis on scientific knowledge, technology
transfer and increasing their participation in Africa’s development.
DIKANZA and MARIMBA
They are two original and typically Angolan musical instruments used in the
composition of the Semba musical genre (different from the Brazilian
Samba) and which was popularized by the Angolan Diaspora in Europe and
the Americas.
Dikanza can be made of cane or bamboo, with grooves whose function is
to produce sound through friction. It is treated by some as reco-reco, a
term not accepted by its performers and Angolan researchers.
In turn, the Marimba or Dimba is a touch instrument similar to the
xylophone, with wooden lamellae, which when struck with drumsticks
produce a sound. A “generic” specimen is the ceramophone.
